Muse PetSmart: It Shopped and Paid, Without My Card

2026-10-06

Muse can shop and pay on its own, safely. One message, and four bags of dog treats were chosen, discounted, paid for and waiting at the store. The whole time, the only money it could reach was a prepaid gift card — no card number, no bank approval, nothing left behind afterwards.

One message. No website.

Us: "Please order some treats for my dog from PetSmart for me."

That's the entire input. No brand, no size, no quantity, no store. Muse asked which treats — or a budget, if we weren't sure — then volunteered something we hadn't mentioned:

Muse: "I'll plan on pickup at the [local] store like your dog food order, unless you'd rather have them shipped."

It remembered where the last pet order went. From there it picked the products, applied a deal and placed the order itself. We never opened petsmart.com.

What it was holding when it spent

That's the part worth being precise about. An agent choosing its own products and placing its own order is only as safe as the money behind it.

Before the order went in, we asked for one thing:

Us: "Please help me purchase a PetSmart gift card using Snaplii before I place my order."

So what Muse had was a $50 PetSmart gift card, bought from a prepaid Snaplii balance. Not a credit card. Not a bank connection. One card, good at one retailer, worth exactly what we put on it.

  • No card number ever entered the conversation.
  • No bank was asked to approve anything mid-order.
  • Nothing persists. The agent doesn't keep a reusable credential afterwards.
  • The ceiling is arithmetic. A $50 card buys $50 of pet supplies and then stops — not a setting an agent can be talked out of.

That's also why the run finished unattended instead of stalling at checkout — the mechanism is here. Setting it up is three steps, once: fund a balance, create a key with a daily limit, paste it into Muse.

The deal we weren't looking for

Four items, picked and priced by the agent:

ItemPrice
Pupford freeze-dried beef training treats, 2 oz$11.49
Zuke's Mini Naturals chicken, 16 oz$14.99
Zuke's Mini Naturals salmon, 6 oz$5.94
Natural Balance Mini Rewards salmon, 5.3 oz$6.99

Then the part worth pausing on:

LineAmount
Subtotal$39.41
Store deal applied−$15.78
Tax+$2.53
Order total$26.16
Paid with$50 PetSmart gift card, bought through Snaplii
Out of pocket$0.00
Left on the card$23.84

About 40% off a basket we never comparison-shopped. Nobody went looking for a promotion or checked whether the 16 oz beat the 6 oz on unit price. And the $23.84 isn't gone — it stays on the card in the Snaplii account, ready for the next pet run.

Ready in two hours

Muse: "Done! Your treats order is placed 🎉 — PetSmart pickup."

Same store, same day, ready in about two hours. Pickup was a choice, not a constraint — Muse had offered to ship the order to the door instead, and saying so would have taken the same one sentence.

Total human involvement: one sentence, one request to pay by gift card, one confirmation. The agent did the shopping, found the discount, and spent the money — holding nothing that could reach past a $50 card.

FAQ

Is it safe to let an AI agent pay for things?

It depends entirely on what the agent is holding. In this run Muse held a prepaid gift card for one retailer, bought from a Snaplii balance — so the most it could spend was the card's value, at that store, and no card number or bank credential was involved at any point.

Can Muse order from PetSmart?

Yes. In our run Muse took a one-line request, picked four treat products, applied a store deal, paid with a gift card, placed the order for in-store pickup, and reported the order number — without us visiting the website.

How did Muse pay for the PetSmart order?

With a PetSmart gift card bought through Snaplii from a prepaid balance. The order came to $26.16, the card covered it in full, and $0 was charged to any credit card.

Did the agent find a discount?

Yes — a $15.78 store deal on a $39.41 subtotal, about 40% off. We didn't ask for it and didn't go looking.

Can an AI agent use store pickup instead of shipping?

Either. Muse offered both and defaulted to in-store pickup at the location it remembered from a previous pet order — ready in roughly two hours. Asking for delivery to your door instead is a sentence. It handled pickup the same way on a household restock.

AI decides. AI acts. Snaplii handles the payment.
